Mock Exams: Why They're the Highest-Value Hours of the Whole Journey
Children don't underperform on exam day because they lack knowledge — they underperform because the conditions are alien. Mocks fix that, if you use them properly.
What a mock exam actually trains
A full timed mock trains things no amount of topic practice can: pacing across a whole paper, stamina for 45–60 minutes of sustained concentration, the discipline to skip and return, handling the answer-sheet format, and — most importantly — familiarity with exam pressure itself. The first full paper a child ever sits should never be the real one.
How many, and when
A sensible schedule: a first 'benchmark' mock in spring of Year 5 (expect a modest score — that's the point), then one every 2–3 weeks through the summer, totalling 4–8 full papers before September. More than that adds fatigue, not marks.
Make conditions realistic: correct timings, no help, no pausing, a quiet room, and the same format (multiple-choice answer sheets if that's what your area uses). A generous 'practice mode' mock teaches habits the real exam will punish.
The review is worth more than the mock
The score is the least useful output of a mock. The gold is in the error review, done within a day or two:
- •Sort errors into: didn't know it / knew it but rushed / misread the question / ran out of time
- •'Didn't know it' errors set the next fortnight's study topics
- •Rushing and misreading errors are fixed by technique (underline what's asked; two-pass strategy), not more content
- •Track section timings — if maths was fine but VR was 10 questions unfinished, pacing practice goes there
Managing the emotional side
Early mock scores are usually deflating — a child scoring 60% in May can absolutely be exam-ready by September. Frame every mock as training, not judgement: footballers don't cry over a hard training session. Celebrate improvements in specific skills ('your inference answers were much stronger') rather than raw percentages, and never share scores with other families — comparison poisons morale faster than any hard paper.
