11+ English Explained: What's Tested and How to Build the Skills That Score
Comprehension carries the most marks and takes the longest to improve. What the English paper tests, and the daily habits that actually raise scores.
What the English paper covers
The 11+ English paper typically tests:
- •Reading comprehension — usually the biggest section: understanding, inference, and 'why did the author…' questions on one or two passages
- •Spelling — identifying misspelt words in context
- •Punctuation and grammar — spotting and fixing errors
- •Vocabulary — synonyms, antonyms and words in context (especially heavy in CEM areas)
Comprehension: the section that decides the paper
Comprehension rewards two distinct skills: retrieval (finding stated information — the easy marks) and inference (working out what's implied — where papers are won and lost). Children lose inference marks not because they can't think, but because they answer from their own imagination instead of evidence in the text.
The habit that fixes it: 'prove it from the passage'. Every answer must point to a line. Practise this and inference scores climb within weeks.
Vocabulary: the slow-burn advantage
Vocabulary can't be crammed — it's built by exposure over years, which is why daily reading is the most repeated advice in 11+ preparation (and why it's still right). Accelerators that genuinely work: keep a word journal of unknown words met in reading; play synonym/antonym games; and read a mix of modern fiction and older classics — 11+ passages often use pre-1950 texts whose vocabulary surprises children raised on contemporary books.
SPaG: the cheapest marks on the paper
Spelling, punctuation and grammar questions follow patterns and can be practised directly: homophones (their/there/they're), apostrophes, common misspellings, and comma usage cover most of what appears. These are the fastest marks to secure — a few focused sessions can lift this section to near-full marks, freeing exam time for the comprehension.
