Non-Verbal Reasoning Explained: How to Get Good at the 'IQ Test' Paper

Shapes, rotations, matrices and codes — NVR looks like an intelligence test, but it rewards trained pattern-spotting. Here's the systematic way to improve.

What NVR actually tests

Non-verbal reasoning presents visual puzzles: sequences of shapes, grids with a missing tile, rotated or reflected figures, and shape 'codes'. It's often described as un-teachable innate intelligence. That's wrong — NVR performance improves dramatically with training, because every question type has a small set of underlying rules to check.

The main question types

  • •Series — which shape comes next in the sequence?
  • •Matrices — complete the missing square in a 2×2 or 3×3 grid
  • •Odd one out — which figure doesn't belong?
  • •Analogies — shape A is to shape B as shape C is to…?
  • •Codes — letters stand for features (shape, shading, size); decode the new figure
  • •Rotation and reflection — which option is the same figure turned or mirrored?
  • •3D questions — nets of cubes, and 2D views of 3D shapes (heavier in CEM)

The checklist method

Teach your child to check features one at a time instead of staring at the whole figure: Shape (what changes?), Size, Shading, Number (of sides, dots, elements), Position, Rotation. Almost every NVR rule is a change in one or two of these. A child who runs the checklist methodically beats a child hunting for inspiration — especially at question 40 of 50, when concentration flags.

Common pitfalls to train out: confusing rotation with reflection (a rotated flag never mirrors), missing that two rules operate at once, and spending two minutes on one stubborn matrix. Skip, mark, return.
